Richard Harris and Rachel Roberts star in Lindsay Anderson’s gritty parable of life in the North. Harris plays a mean, tough and ambitious miner who becomes an immediate star in the rugby league team run by local employer. He lodges with a woman whose husband was killed in an accident at the same pit, but even as he begins to fall in love he cannot escape the harsh realities of the bleak life around him.
