This day is designed for children to learn all about Birds of Prey and falconry within an ANCIENT ROMAN context, investigating the significance of raptors within their culture - particularly with regard to the use of eagles as the Imperial Standard.

We will look at the
Roman Gods - Jupiter, the God of Light & Sky, the supreme god of the Roman Pantheon, and protector of the State and its Laws; and Juno & Minerva, whose temples were commonly built at the centre of all new Roman cities and colonies.

Then we will find out more about the symbols of these divine powers, the
Lightening Bolt and the Eagle, and discover why the icon could be found throughout the Roman sphere of influence as a familiar sight to all its citizens.

Roman soldiers worshipped the military standards they carried into battle, and the
Aquila (or Eagle) was the most important of them all. To them, the Aquila also symbolised the divine right of the the Roman Empire to conquer and civilise other nations and therefore was the symbol of Jupiter's mortal counterpart on Earth, the Roman Emperor.

During the day at SOS, children will be meet the various Eagle species housed at Stonham and examining what sets them apart from other raptors & made them so special to the Ancient Romans.  The children will create
Roman style artworks inspired by the stories, legends and images; assemble roman standards, swords or shields; see at least one flying display and finally a get rare chance to get close to the birds, with plenty of great photo opportunities - so bring a photo-phone or camera!

The Activity Adventure starts at 10.30am and finishes at about 2.15pm. Numbers are limited, so advance booking is necessary and for non-school groups, places are limited to 16 per adventure, so please e-mail
