This Activity Adventure is designed for children to
learn all about birds of prey and falconry in an
ANCIENT EGYPTIAN context.
Raptors played a significant role in the culture of Ancient Egypt, especially Falcons & Vultures. We examine how these birds were important in relation to ancient religions, and investigate the legend of Horus, the Egyptian god with a man’s body and the head of a Falcon.
Then we look at the raptor-related amulets and talismen of the civilisation and the protection they were believed to offer in life and in death, using Tutankhamen’s tomb and his funeral jewellery as an example. Finally, we look at the story of the Egyptian Phoenix, the bird that dies and then is reborn again from fire, and how it may be related to the strange Secretary bird.
Activities may include designing & making Egyptian jewellery; creating a model of Horus; mask making and drawing & painting some of our birds of prey from life using materials provided; a treasure hunt, making hieroglyph name badges; at least one flying display and finally a rare chance to get close to the birds, with plenty of great photo opportunities - so bring a photo-phone or camera!
The Activity Adventure starts at 10.30am and finishes at about 2.15pm. Numbers are limited, so advance booking is necessary and for non-school groups, places are limited to 16 per adventure, so please e-mail info@owlbarn.co.uk or phone 01449 711425 for dates & bookings. Please note that for reasons of safety there is no actual handling of birds by young visitors during this event.
