All about Falconry Through the Ages
• Discover Knights, Crusaders and
George & The Dragon!
• Design a Coat of Arms
• Make a Knight's Shield
• Follow the Bird of Prey Trail
• See a Flying Display of Owls & other Birds of Prey
• Your Chance to take Exclusive Close-Up Photos
Designed for children to learn all about falconry in its HISTORICAL context.
This Activity Adventure starts by illustrating links between birds of prey and George & the Dragon, the Medieval Knights of the Round Table, and the Crusaders who brought the sport of falconry back to England from their travels to Arabia & the Middle East.
Then the adventure delves into why falconry has been important to people throughout history - as a means of providing food for the table; as a sport which dictated your social status according to what type of bird you could fly, and how it eventually became the sport of kings.
It also looks at the main differences between ancient & modern falconry techniques, including how Heron Hawking led to the modern practice of bird ringing.
Activities include designing a Coat of Arms; making a knight’s shield & sword or princesses’s crown from cardboard; designing a dragon; at least one flying display and finally a rare chance to get close to the birds, with plenty of great photo opportunities - so bring a photo-phone or camera!
The Activity Adventure starts at 10.30am and finishes at about 2.15pm. Numbers are limited, so advance booking is necessary and for non-school groups, places are limited to 16 per adventure, so please e-mail info@owlbarn.co.uk or phone 01449 711425 for dates & bookings. Please note that for reasons of safety there is no actual handling of birds by young visitors during this event.
