This Activity Adventure is designed as a fun event for children to learn all about birds of prey and falconry in an EVOLUTIONARY context.
After seeing the Jurassic Park movies, children remain fascinated by Dinosaurs and are aware that birds in general - and birds of prey in particular - are descended from them.
During this event we examine what evolution is by looking at the Archaeopteryx and it fossil relatives, including the most recently discovered four-winged dinosaur, the Microraptor GUI - discovered in 2003.
We study the development of feathers; compare the present day Hoatzin of the Amazon Rainforest (the bird with wing fingers) to its ancestors; and look at Dinosaurs as pack hunters, drawing similarities to the Harris’ Hawks that reside at the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary.
Activities include designing and classifying a dinosaur, making paper dinosaur models, playing the Pack Hunting Dinosaur Game, at least one flying display and finally a rare chance to get close to the birds, with plenty of great photo opportunities - so bring a
photo-phone or camera!
The Activity Adventure starts at 10.30am and finishes at about 2.15pm. Numbers are limited, so advance booking is necessary and for non-school groups, places are limited to 16 per adventure, so please e-mail info@owlbarn.co.uk or phone 01449 711425 for dates & bookings. Please note that for reasons of safety there is no actual handling of birds by young visitors during this event.
